Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get broadband?
To find out if ADSL broadband is available in your area, visit the BT Broadband web site and enter your telephone number into the availability checker.

What kind of phone line do I need?
Any standard BT line. If you have a Home Highway/ISDN line you will need to convert this line back to analogue or install an additional line.

What does the dedicated server do, and why do I need it?
As part of your broadband installation, we will install a dedicated computer. This will handle all your Internet applications, including email and web browsing. The server runs a very secure operating system (NetBSD) so your Windows PCs are protected against intrusion.

The server will also run as a web proxy, which speeds up web browsing - particularly when you are running a network of PCs, all trying to access the web at the same time.

Can I install and run other software on the server?
Yes - you will have full root access and can install what you like. The server is not subject to any leasing, it is your machine.

Be aware however that your support contract will not cover problems caused by software you have installed. You will also need to provide us with root access if we are to undertake any remedial work, regardless of the cause.

What is a UPS, and why do I need one?
A UPS, or uninterruptable power supply, sits between the mains supply and your server. Should the power fail, the UPS switches over to battery backup so the server keeps running during the outage. A 350VA UPS will keep the server and ADSL router running for around 20 minutes. When the UPS battery runs low, the server will automatically shut down.

A UPS is required because simply turning off the power to any server, regardless of OS, is highly dangerous and can result in data loss. The server needs to run through its shutdown sequence before power is removed.
